Signs of Labor in Goats: The Kidding Timeline

As your doe nears her due date, the question shifts from how long to is it today? The most reliable signs of labour are behaviour and the fluid-filled sac - not the ligaments or udder alone. Here is what to watch, in order.

The days before: early signals

Active labour: behavioural signs

The strongest sign of true labour is a focused, quiet, inward doe who braces during contractions and gets up and down. Watch for pawing, nesting, staring at her flank, stretching, and soft talking or grunting.

Important: a doe still walking, eating and doing laps is not in active labour yet. It is the combination of restlessness, discharge and that focused behaviour together that means kids are close.

The kidding timeline

Stage 1 (2-12 hours)

Cervix dilates, contractions begin, the doe is restless.

Stage 2 (up to ~1 hour per kid)

Hard pushing, the water bag appears, then the kid. A normal presentation is two front hooves with a nose resting on them.

Stage 3

The placenta passes, usually within a few hours. Dip each kid’s navel in iodine and make sure they nurse colostrum within the first two hours.

When to call the vet

When in doubt, call early - a vet would rather talk you through it than arrive too late. Make sure your kidding kit is ready in advance; our pregnant goat care guide lists everything you need, and the calculator dates your kidding-watch window for you.
